The scene starts off with a long shot of the whole family. They are all surrounding a female character that is positioned in the centre of our screens. This could suggest that this character enjoys being centre of attention with all eyes on her. Another feature that supports this is the type of costume and clothing chosen, which I will analyse in a moment. However everyone is wearing black, which shows it’s a wake that they are at although the music doesn’t seem to support this. The music played is a diagetic sound as the source of music is in the scene. The music is happy and quite cheery and wakes are stereotypically a time of mourning and sadness. So this Irish upbeat music summarises the Irish lifestyle quite well, as it suggests that Irish people spend a lot of time as a family together which is shown in this scene and they also like to do Irish dancing even though it’s a wake, which could suggest as an Irish family they are quite laid back and like to enjoy themselves. At this point its set in a common Irish home, this is supported with the types of props used as the audience can see that this family aren’t rich and seem to be working class citizens as the style of furniture used is quite dated and old fashioned, not modern but this emphasises the Irish lifestyle. The contrast in clothing between the dancing girl and everyone else is very significant as it emphasises her character and personality. Everyone is wearing black, accept the fact everyone is covered head to toe with formal clothing and the girl is wearing a miniature skirt, bare legs and heels, with a bright red bra which is seen. This could represent that she is a flamboyant girl but also that she is confident and doesn’t care what others may think about her. This is supported with the fact she is the only one up dancing.
Continuing through the scene there are several cuts to a medium close up of 3 people sat on the sofa having a conversation. These shots are quite comical as on the right there is Malachy’s mum tapping her leg with a smile, showing she is happy and in a good mood. Sat in the middle is Malachy, he is sat with his dad’s ashes between his legs which isn’t the most formal and safest place tp put them, suggesting he isn’t a serious guy and doesn’t really care. The irony kicks in when he is say with a can of beer leaning on his dads ashes, this could hint that possibly his dad died due to alcohol and he is drinking at his wake, so its slightly ironic the link between the two.
Then there is a cut to several characters look towards the door, these are close ups and are there to emphasise the shock reaction on all their faces, the transitions are reasonably fast which is to emphasise the unexpectedness of whatever it is they are looking at. The audience has established its something shocking as the other people are all gasping and the music stops gradually, sort of like instrument by instrument. At this point the audience can’t see what it is everyone is looking at, creating this sense of enigma as they don’t know what is happening. It cuts to a medium close up of Malachy’s mum’s face as she is still smiling and then turns to her left looking at what everyone else is looking at . The reaction on her face swiftly changes into shock and she is flabbergasted at what she sees. The camera zooms in fast, but only a short distance, this is matched with the recorder player playing a bum note which are both in synchronise with each other. This again emphasises the shock on the mothers face with the close up reaction shot and the recorder player as she is obviously distracted by what she sees. Then finally the audience get to see what everyone else sees which is in some way like an eyeline match as everyone was looking at it and now the audience can. This goes back to the original crowd shot which is also like a point of view shot as its inline with all the other characters and is like someone standing with everyone else. This time in this shot everyone else is positioned the same apart from one extra character who is positioned in the centre of our screens and is in front of the first girl, this could suggest that this new character likes to be centre of attention and likes to stand out of the crowd, it’s also like they are competing to be centre of our screen and want all focus on them.
This characters costume is interesting as he is a male character yet he is wearing female clothing and to be more specific, a replica copy of Kylie Minogue’s outfit in her video for “can’t get you out of my head” who is a female icon. The fact that he is wearing female clothing makes him stand out even more and this outfit is white so he has decided to be in contrast to everyone else who is wearing black. This outfit is like a cross between a cat suit and a dress which isn’t a very masculine outfit and again is in contrast with all the other males present who are wearing suits with ties and trousers. This emphasises his gender role of being a cross dressing bisexual even more. Another factor that contrasts him from other males is the fact he is wearing make up, not subtle make up, full on eyeliner and bright red lipstick which shows that he isn’t fazed by wearing this kind of stuff.
At the end of this clip it finishes on a medium close up of Malachy side on with, a soft piece of music playing it then goes into a clip of a girl, this music is a sound bridge and links these two characters in some way, possibly boyfriend and girlfriend yet the audience won’t know this. The lyrics kick in as its focusing on Mercedes, she is static and stares at one thing for a very long time without moving or any distractions this could suggest that she is thinking about something or someone. There is a cross dissolve which joins the shot of her with some sort of thought or flashback, this transition is used as it’s a slow and soft movement and thoughts or daydreams are suppose to be soft. These thoughts/flashbacks have a hazy filter which emphasises this idea of her thinking, it is also largely monochrome with the odd slither of subtle colour, the reason this has been used is it show that she is daydreaming and to make it totally obvious that this isn’t happening now and that its in her head and happened previously, clearly separating reality from imagination and being in contrast to each other. There are several shorts clips of happy memories she spent with Malachy and the transitions between these short clips are more cross dissolves again emphasising this idea of her daydreaming. These shots are very centre focused and seem to have made the background and setting quite blurred but still able to see where they are, this is also used to emphasise that these aren’t totally picture perfect as they are memories of what she remembered. The non-diagetic sound still continues through this scene. The end of these thoughts there is a cross dissolve and goes back to Mercedes where it is back to reality, to show that she was daydreaming, Mercedes stayed still throughout the daydream and continued back to the position she was originally in showing that she wasn’t distracted and maintained focus on her thoughts. As it starts to go back to her face the music comes to an end just letting the audience know that this scene is finishing soon. Then at the very end there is a black fade, totally separating the two scenes and may mean they have no relation and that the next scene is about a totally different story.
So throughout the scene it’s clear to see the way the Irish lifestyle is represented and also gender roles, this was done by analysing camera angles, editing, mise-en-scene and sound and music and how each of these features contribute in the representations.
